Most of you are used to it by now on your vehicles as almost every car and truck model out there has ABS brakes as a standard feature. In 1998 BMW was the first motorcycle to have ABS and although it has taken more time than we may like, it is finally getting seen more on manufacturers models to the point that in 2012 BMW motorcycles made it standard on all models in their lineup.
Many people believe that the biggest benefit to ABS is being able to stop quicker, and although many times it is true, the biggest benefit to anti lock brakes on motorcycles is being able to remain in control of the direction the bike is traveling as the abs keeps the tires from locking up and sliding. Being able to steer during an emergency stop can help you possibly avoid an accedent altogether and will prevent the rear end from sliding out on you.
How Does ABS Work?
Anti lock brakes sense wheel rotation many times every second and, if the wheel rotation dramatically reduces while braking, it indicates that wheel locking is imminent and will pulse the brake pressure many times per second (depending on the manufacturer). This will keep the wheels rotating and aids in the driver staying in control.
It may take some getting used to, but everyone should consider a bike with ABS. Most likely all bikes will be equipped with ABS in the next few years. Do we think that ABS brakes on motorcycles will save lives? Absolutley!
