Starting in Duluth, which is a great place to visit itself, just take US Highway 61 (north) and follow beautiful Lake Superior all the way to the quaint little town of Grand Marais. Besides the gorgeous views you will experience, there are plenty of great places to stop and eat, sleep, play and sight see. Here are a few that you may want to hit on the way up.
Split Rock Lighthouse - From 1910 - 1969 the lighthouse shown its bright beacon to all ships traveling along the north shore from Duluth to Canada. Now you can tour the lighthouse and see what life was like as a lighthouse keeper and their daily duties. Once again the views are tremendous.
Bettys World Famous Pies - If you like pie this is a must stop attraction. For over 50 years Betty's Pies has been one of those stops that is almost impossible to pass up. From making pies in her kitchen to now selling them online all over the world, do yourself a favor and take a dessert break at Betty's.
Lutsen Recreational Area - Whether you want to stop and have some good food at Papa Charlie's, have some fun on the alpine slide, or ride the gondola to the top of the mountain. There is so much to do at Lutsen ski area that you could dedicate a day. Hiking, biking, and great lodging are all a part of Lutsen Rec area also.
Sawtooth Outfitters Kayak Tours - The view from the shore is beautiful, but getting in a Kayak and following the shore line will give you a very different perspective on just how beautiful this area is. Tofte is the town you will find Sawtooth Outfitters and they offer half day tours and full day tours.
These are just a small sampling of the many places to stop as you travel the north shore on Hwy 61. I am sure you will find your own favorite stops along the way!
